Delicious and authentic food that I know a lot of people are missing out on. I love their sandwiches, the bread is so good. And I'm addicted to the sweets, especially the lady fingers they make there themselves. What really makes it the best experience and has me coming back so often is the great service. They're so welcoming and genuine and I appreciate their superb hospitality. It's almost like visiting at someone's home, they're so kind!
Mary Del CarpioGoogle
This is hands-down the best Iraqi bakery. The handmade phyllo dough is incredibly delicate and flaky, and the baklava strikes that perfect balance — crisp layers, rich nuts, and just the right touch of sweetness without being heavy or syrupy. You can truly taste the care and tradition in every bite. I regularly mail treats from Al Baghdady's to family in Florida because they can't find any even slightly as delicious near them.
Tricia MorraGoogle
Good services, owner and staff are very kind. Sweets (znoud set, awama, home-made tahini and many types of sweets are very good with great quality). I recommend trying this restaurant because the food and sweets are really good and even the atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy.

Iraqi Cuisine — A Guide to the Iraqi Bakery & Breakfast Tradition

Iraqi cuisine is its own world — distinct breads like samoon, a beloved morning tradition of kahi, qeimar and baqila, and a bakery heritage of baklava, kanafa and mabrouma stretching back over a century. The techniques, spice blends, and family recipes carry their own Baghdadi heritage. Here's a guide to what we bake fresh every day at Al-Baghdady.

01 — Dish

Samoon

Iraq's traditional oval-shaped bread.

Samoon is what holds an Iraqi table together. It's an oval-shaped, diamond-faceted bread baked at high heat — crisp on the outside, pillowy and chewy inside. We bake fresh samoon throughout the day in our in-house stone oven. It's the perfect partner to a breakfast plate, a piece of baklava, or a glass of hot chai.

Read more about our samoon →
02 — Dish

Kahi & Qeimar

Iraq's most beloved sweet breakfast.

Kahi is flaky, golden, layered pastry — shatteringly crisp, brushed with syrup — and qeimar is the rich clotted cream served alongside it. Together they're the breakfast Iraqis grew up on. We make kahi fresh every morning; it's the first thing many of our regulars order.

Read more about our Iraqi breakfast →
03 — Dish

Baqila

Fava beans simmered in their own broth.

Baqila bil-dihin is a national Iraqi breakfast tradition — tender fava beans slow-simmered in their own broth, served with eggs, crispy fried onions, and warm bread soaked in the broth. Warming, humble, and deeply satisfying.

04 — Dish

Kubba

Bulgur shells stuffed with spiced meat.

Iraqi kubba is hand-rolled — a bulgur shell wrapped around seasoned ground meat, onions and herbs, then fried until golden and crisp. We serve it as a breakfast plate or a sandwich, and it's just as good torn into a bowl of sour kibbeh broth.

05 — Dish

Kanafa

Sticky cheese pastry soaked in syrup.

Kanafa is the dessert that's having a moment everywhere — and we've been making it the right way for years. Shredded phyllo dough, melted cheese, rose-water syrup and crushed pistachios. The trick is the contrast: crispy top, gooey cheese center, syrupy sweetness.

Read more about our kunafa →
06 — Dish

Baklava

Layered phyllo with nuts and honey.

Our baklava is made fresh in the bakery — paper-thin phyllo layered with walnut or pistachio and our family's honey syrup. We sell it by the piece or by the tray, perfect for parties, Eid and weddings. The recipe has been in our family since 1919.

Read more about our baklava →
07 — Dish

Mabrouma

Coiled phyllo packed with pistachios.

Mabrouma is the showpiece of the Iraqi sweets case — long strands of phyllo coiled tight around fresh pistachios, baked deep gold and finished with syrup. We make it plain, with cream, and in a premium pistachio-loaded version.

08 — Dish

Burma

Cigar-rolled phyllo with pistachios.

Burma is rolled phyllo, packed end to end with pistachios and finished with syrup — crisp, nutty, and one of the lesser-known Iraqi sweets worth seeking out. Cut into rounds, it's a favorite on celebration trays.

Read more about our burma →
09 — Dish

Ladyfingers (Znood Al Sit)

Crispy phyllo rolls filled with sweet cream.

Znood al sit — literally 'the lady's arms' — are crisp phyllo rolls stuffed with sweet cream and dipped in fragrant syrup. Light, crunchy and beautifully sweet. A bakery-case favorite.

Read more about our ladyfingers →
10 — Dish

Awama

Bite-sized fried dough fritters in syrup.

Awama (luqaimat) are little fried dough fritters — crisp outside, soft inside, soaked in our family's honey syrup. A celebration favorite at every Iraqi gathering, most often spotted on Eid and wedding trays.

11 — Dish

Fatayer

Hand-folded savory pies.

Fatayer are hand-folded savory pies, baked fresh daily — spinach, cheese or seasoned meat tucked into soft, golden dough. Perfect with chai, by the box for an office breakfast, or by the tray for a gathering.

Read more about our fatayer →
12 — Dish

Manakish

Hand-stretched flatbread, baked to order.

Manakish is hand-stretched flatbread topped with za'atar, cheese, or meat — Middle Eastern breakfast at its most authentic. A weekend staple in our Richardson bakery, baked fresh on the spot.

Our Story
Our Story

The 100-Year Story of Dallas–Fort Worth's Best Iraqi Bakery and Breakfast Café

It All Started in Baghdad, 1919

Our story begins not in Texas, but in Baghdad — in 1919 — where our family first opened a bakery. Al-Baghdady — البغدادي — simply means the one from Baghdad, and for over a century, that name has meant the same thing wherever we've stood: hand-made breads, Iraqi sweets, and delicious Iraqi dishes.

Authentic Traditional Iraqi Sweets

The recipes have passed from one generation to the next — same techniques, same standards, same insistence that bread is sacred. The breads, the baklava, the ladyfingers stuffed with cream — these aren't recipes we found. They've been in our family since 1919, kept alive through war, migration, and the patience of teaching the next pair of hands.

Representing Iraqi Heritage and Family Recipes in Texas

Our father and master baker Salah Hassan, grew up learning about our traditional recipes and has been perfecting his craft for 50 years, following in the footsteps of his father. As D Magazine noted, he ‘quietly turns out his wares’ with a skill that only comes from a lifetime of tradition. When you visit, you aren't just getting bread; you're getting a century of expertise from a true professional.

In 2012, he brought the family trade to Texas, opening a small storefront on Greenville Avenue in Richardson — two parking spots and a counter — and began to bake the way our family has always baked.

ضيافة — The Reason We Bake

For our father, this was never just about selling bread. It was about ḍiyāfaIraqi hospitality. The belief that no one should leave your table hungry, that bread is sacred, that guests are a gift. He wanted his customers in Texas to taste what he tasted growing up in Baghdad — the warmth of a kitchen where everything is made by hand.

Taste of Iraq in the Heart of Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas

For over a decade now, our small breakfast place beside the barber shop has been a quiet landmark — a place loyal customers drive across Greenville Ave for, and where new neighbors discover their first bite of real Iraqi baking.

Come See Us in the Morning, When the Bread is Hottest

The best time to find us is early, when the bread is freshest and the trays are just out. Come in for breakfast — a warm samoon, a piece of baklava, a ladyfinger with your chai — and let the day start the way it should and end your day with delicious kunafa in the evening.

Frequently asked questions.

We make three varieties: Pistachio Baklava (our most-ordered, made with fresh-ground pistachios), Walnut Baklava (a traditional richer variety), and Mixed Baklava (a tray combining our walnut and pistachio varieties). All baked fresh in our in-house bakery.
Our baklava is best within 5–7 days at room temperature in a sealed container. For longer storage, refrigerate up to 2 weeks. For events, we recommend buying it the day of or one day prior.
Yes — assorted baklava trays are one of our most-requested items for Eid, weddings, Ramadan iftars and corporate events. Custom sizes available; order at least 24 hours ahead through our catering page.
Baklava is shared across the Middle East and Mediterranean, so you'll see Greek baklava, Turkish baklava, and Arab versions, each a little different. Ours is Iraqi-style: paper-thin filo (also spelled phyllo) pastry layered with fresh pistachios and walnuts and our family's honey syrup. Whatever you call it, it's the baklava our family has baked since 1919.
